Song of the Open RoadBecki's Travels Around the World

Welcome to the Jungle!

Cue the Guns N’ Roses classic as the theme song for this blog post…I left the chaos of Bangkok for 3 days and headed about 2 1/2 hours north west of the city to the Kanchanaburi region of the country. By the way, that is only 130 km (less than 100 miles for my US friends). Travel does not go quickly in these parts – so much traffic, so unless you are flying – don’t expect to to break any land speed records (my trip back to the city took 4 1/2 hrs). Two themes to this side trip – nature and the railway (I’ll leave the railway for another post). The feature photo looks towards the mountains dividing Thailand and Myanmar – about 25km of jungle between me and the border.

My hotel for the 3 days was located on the banks of the River Kwai and arrived in by long tail boat. The cliffs, jungle and river back drop were absolutely stunning. I really do love being in the jungle, the smells and sounds are so different from the buzz of city life. During my time there I travelled to a waterfall in the Sai Yok National Park (2 hrs upstream travel by boat) and roamed through a local cave – which was full of bats and some rather nice stalactites. However the roughly 150 steps to get to the entrance of the cave…not so nice. By the end of the trip I had seen a few monkeys and my first elephant – Wendy. I know that she will be the first of many to come – especially once I get up into Northern Thailand. The scenery was incredible and the photos don’t do it any justice.

Can’t wait for my next adventure into the jungle!! Here is some bonus footage of our group going by the waterfall in our long tail boat.
