Song of the Open RoadBecki's Travels Around the World

A Minute in Manila

So my time in the Philippines was rather short – but I did get a chance to spend a few days in Manila on my way out of the country – and in fact – that is where I spent Christmas. So spoiler alert – if you are following along in real time, I am about 2 months behind in posting my blog entries – I’ve been busy 😂 And clearly a sabbatical hasn’t cured my ability to procrastinate – haha.

Downtown Sights

My hotel was downtown so I managed to find enough time to squeeze in a few of the sights in and around the downtown core. I visited some of the more historic sights and even stumbled upon a wedding at the Manila Cathedral. This Cathedral has been rebuilt no less than 8 times due to earthquakes, bombings and typhoons! It is also really weird having such hot temperatures for Christmas. I’ve included some pictures of their decorations – same as back home. Just minus the snow!

More Cool Ways to Travel

As always, I need to share the various ways that the locals get around the city. Unique to the Philippines are Jeepneys and have been in use since the 1950s (and some look like they are that old, too). The original Jeepneys were made from remodelled military Jeeps – and have since served as the main mode of public transit in the Philippines. Figure out where they are going, jump in and pay your driver when they get to your destination!
