After making all of that progress to the eastern part of Thailand, it was time to head back to Bangkok to catch my bus to Siem Reap Cambodia. After almost 60 days in Thailand – my visa was about to expire, so time to get ready for the next country. This post is focused on some of my food experiences during those days back in Bangkok.
The Maeklong Railway Market
So this segment is going to be packed full of videos, because words cannot possibly do it justice. Although not technically in Bangkok, I’m taking a little creative license to include my trip to the Maeklong Market in this segment. This food market is actually set up on a set of railway tracks about an hour outside of Bangkok. The train passes by 4 times a day, and when the train arrives, the vendors close their awnings and move their product off the tracks. Immediately after the train passes, within seconds the awnings are back up and the market resumes. So I’ve got a few video segments – me on the train, and the views from inside the train, me walking along the tracks at the market, the train arriving (me beside the tracks) and the quick reassembly of the market once the train has passed by. Such a totally wild experience!!!
Jek Pui Curry
Jek Pui Curry was on my “must experience” list for Bangkok. Based in Chinatown, this street food institution has been serving up great food at great prices for decades. Find yourself an available red stool on the side of the street and place your order. For $2 Cdn, I enjoyed an amazing bowl of chicken curry, with tasty Chinese sausage.
The Perfect Dessert
If you are in search of the perfect dessert – look no further…mango sticky rice fits the bill!! The soft sweet taste of the mango, coupled with the sweet condensed milk drizzled over sticky rice and topped with crunchy salty peanuts – YUM! Don’t worry if you don’t have a local Thai restaurant, just hop on a plane and come join me on my travels!
If you want to learn more about the amazing food culture in Bangkok, check out these Netflix episodes. And yes, there is a reason that Bangkok is the first episode on these shows….it is foodie heaven!
